In a normal conversation
among fitness training enthusiasts
and training experts the term BMR
or basal metabolic rate will
always come up. In a nutshell, BMR
is the amount of calories you burn even when at
rest in a room that is neither too cold nor too
hot; and when you are not exerting energy on physical
activities.
How can I relate basal metabolic rate with my fitness goals?
- As you grow older, your BMR
declines, due to the decrease of lean body mass.
- The way you burn calories when you were younger is a lot faster than the way you do now.
- You would have to adjust your eating habits to cope with declining basal metabolic rate. You may no longer go splurging on food trips and eating anything you want; that is, not if you want to maintain your ideal weight.
The good news is that increasing muscle mass through fitness training could drastically increase your basal metabolic rate.
With a good balance of proper
nutrition, and appropriate weight training and
exercise, a person may increase his BMR
to fit his lifestyle as he ages.
Remember that metabolic rate
differs from person to person because of variations
in biochemical and physical aspects, age and behavior.
For this reason, a fitness training
and weight management program must be patterned
according to the person’s unique BMR.
To measure your body’s daily caloric needs, the BMR value is multiplied by a factor which represents your current activity level.
